After extensive medical checks, Robert has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand. He is undergoing surgery.

Not the best of starts to his first season with Lotus, sounds borderline for him to be ready for the first race in March....fingers crossed he makes a full and speedy recovery.

there was a mention on news feeds about doctors/surgeons had considered amputating his hand due to the condition. It sounds like he will be out of the season if the severity of this accident is as bad as it sounds suggested by orthopaedic surgeons.

What will LRGP do with no number 1 driver, I cant imagine Bruno stepping in, Kubica could be out for about 3 or 4 months and will likely need physio on his hand and arm. Who could replace him?

Oh man. This is very sad. I was really looking forward to him pushing the front runners again this year. I hope he makes it back.

Bruno was said to be first choice but whether they will look to some one else if he is going to be out long term we will have to see.

Sky news just reported doctors have said it could be 12 months before he will gains full use of his hand again, I think they will be forced to find a number one driver. Im speculating that they would prefer a french or british driver, but, think at the moment they dont have a lead driver in the team so its bit dissapointing start already when he was doing well in testing

Bad news for Kubica, Bruno will step up, another Senna under the Lotus name as the start window is quickly approaching.

Robert’s general condition is much better today.

After spending the night under constant observation, he was briefly woken up by the doctors of the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure) this morning. The Lotus Renault GP driver was then able to talk to his relatives. He was also able to move his fingers, which is encouraging for the rest of his recovery process.

Professor Mario Igor Rossello, Director for the Regional Centre of Hand Surgery at San Paolo Hospital in Savona, did not notice any swelling or infection on his right forearm, and this is another good sign, although it will be several days before it is known if the operation has been 100% successful.

In order to avoid any physical stress, Robert will be put under gentle medication in order to sleep for the next 24 hours at least. Meanwhile, the doctors will decide how they will treat his elbow and shoulder fractures. Robert may have to undergo surgery once again for this, but not for a few days.

Lotus Renault GP wishes to thank the Hospital of San Paolo (Savona) and the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure) for their professional approach and their dedication.

Lotus Renault GP will issue another update on Robert’s condition later this evening.

Today, Robert’s general condition has once again improved. According to the doctors, the levels of inflammation are in the norm considering his medical condition, and the recovery of his forearm remains encouraging.

Yesterday, Robert was able to talk to his doctors and relatives. His medication makes him sleep quite a lot, but he is responding to all external stimulation. He has reacted well to the news about his condition and is ready to fight for his comeback.

On Thursday, Robert should undergo some more surgery in order to stabilise the fractures to his right shoulder and right foot. Three or four days later, another operation will allow his elbow fracture to be stabilised as well.

Robert will remain at the Santa Corona Hospital for two to three weeks. A decision will then be taken about where he should go in order to continue his rehabilitation.

Robert’s condition has improved further and he has now been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the Department of Orthopaedics.

The surgery scheduled for tomorrow will be on his humerus and foot. A further update will be available tomorrow following the surgery.

Robert had further surgery today at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure. A team of 15 doctors and nurses were involved to carry out surgery to his foot, shoulder, humerous, and anterior elbow. Dr. Francesco Lanza from the Orthopaedic Department confirmed that the four operations had gone well. Robert will remain in intensive care over the weekend, with the final surgery planned for next week to treat the posterior part of the elbow.

Dr. Rosello also provided an update on the condition of Robert’s hand: “Robert’s hand is in optimal condition and has not suffered any further trauma after such complex surgery. His hand remains well vascularised and warm.”

The latest update on Robert is that his condition remains positive. He will stay in intensive care for the next couple of days to allow a complete check-up and to avoid another change of department before his final operation.

His good general condition means that the final surgery (on the elbow) is scheduled for Wednesday.

As scheduled, Robert was back in surgery today as doctors at Santa Corona Hospital treated the complex fracture to his elbow.

The operation lasted eight hours in order to stabilise and reconstruct the damaged fragments of the delicate joint structure. At the end of the surgery, the doctors were pleased with the outcome, with the procedure being completed successfully

Robert will remain in intensive care for a few days as he recovers from this latest operation.
