Which Engine Would You Use And Why?

Inspired by PhilS Rover Turbo transplant, I thought it might be interesting to see what people would stick in their car.

To keep it simple and possible, stick to in line 4 pots or smaller!

Here are couple to kick it off....

VAG 1.4FSI Twin Charger...175Bhp both Turbo and Supercharged..Manges to get a golf along only a wee bit slower than the Gti. Yet does 40Mpg in a golf...So would do better in an elise!

BMW 2.0D 170Bhp Diesel and does 55Mpg in a 3 series...Imagine all that torque....ok limited revs....

So what you go for?

I would go for the tried and tested supercharged Honda VTEC. You can easily get over 300 bhp out of them and I have heard of a few people getting over 400! Imagine that in an elise or exige.

Alfa V6, yes I know it's not a four banger. ;)

Sound nice though! :P

Audi/VAG for me... Especially as the kit is developped and CV joint issues haven't been mentionned...

Another one to consider, Mercedes A class engines as they are in a very similar position (well, sideway)

Come to think of it the VAG 1.4 TSI would be a nice conversion. A couple of VAG tuners are already on the case, easily achieving over 200 bhp reliably.

I was thinking 1.4TSI with a DSG box would be quite cool!

Alfa V6 would definitely get the spine tingling. There was once upon a time a couple of V6 prototypes running round Lotus when I was there. Sounded lovely! Think it was a GM engine at the time...

I'd love to see an Elise with a rotary under the bonnet. The latest Renesis 1.3 puts out 227 bhp and weighs next to nothing. The torque is a bit on the low side though (albeit still about the same as an Exige S), but stick a turbo/sc on it and you can bump the figures up nicely. Or you could use the rotary from the RX7 and replace it every 20k miles!

The down sides are the insatiable thirst and the fact that the engine and gearbox layout make it not so suitable for a transplant. Would be interesting though.

If anyone wants to buy a renesis to try, give me a shout. Car still attached though ;)

Yeah I'd be up for a drive!

I'll swap you a go in the bucket...
